The Panda Restaurant Group, parent company of Panda Inn, Panda Express & Hibachi-San, was founded by Andrew and Peggy Cherng and Andrew's father, Master Chef Ming-Tsai Cherng, all of whom used to live in the Yangzhou region of China's Jiangsu province. They started their first Panda Inn restaurant in 1973 in Pasadena, California.[1] The group has its headquarters in Rosemead, California.[2]

Andrew Cherng '70 and his wife Peggy Tsiang Cherng '68 are alumni of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.[3]

The Panda Restaurant Group includes Panda Express, Panda Inn, and Hibachi-San.

Panda Express, being the most popular, has 1,197 locations as of the end of January, 2009, making it the largest Chinese fast food chain in the United States. Also, Panda Express has been known to pay significantly higher than federal and state minimum wage.

Panda Inn, a sit-down restaurant chain, has 7 locations, all of which are in California.
